What do kids need in all day schools?

# PARTICIPATIV DESIGN
#SOCIAL DESIGN

From the 2025/26 school year, every new primary school child at German schools will be entitled to all-day care. Five days a week, 8 hours a day. This means that all-day schooling provides new potential for equal opportunities in education, but also major challenges in terms of time and space. Because school suddenly changes from a learning space to a living space and everyday school life becomes a large part of childhood. But what do children in all-day schooling need and want for the future? With a focus on the need for autonomy, we worked with children from a primary school in Augsburg to develop potentials for all-day schooling of the future. We presented the results in an exhibition for the city of Augsburg, expressing the voices of the children.

The exhibition was open to the public from 6.10 - 30.10.2023 in the Zeughaus Augsburg. Parallel to the exhibition, a book „What does all-day schooling need?“ was published and the results were presented at a symposium on child orientated all-day schooling in Augsburg.

What are the kids need and requirements?

To approach this question, we developed research methods specifically for our case and tested them with children within our partner institution.

Exhibition

The results were translated into an exhibition. In total, the exhibition was open to the public at three different locations over the period of one month.

PROCESS

1 Research
- State of Art, Observations in first grade of an all-day school
- developement and implementation of interventions to identify the needs of the children

- Design of a travelling exhibition and realisation at three different locations
- Summarizing results in a book about the project (chronicle)

3 Further presentations
- Workshop based on results at the symposium "child-friendly all-day care in Augsburg" October 2023

Chronicle

Additionally to the exhibition, we summarized and published our results in a book
